One Hull Of A Story: The Pig Man Of East Hull
There have been many unsolved mysteries and urban legends in Hull and the surrounding area. From the strange happenings and sightings going back centuries in the Wold Newton Triangle to the Phantom Cannons Of Hull during the time of English Civil War. Local historian Mike Covell has written extensively about urban legends in the city, which include tales of a sea serpent, known as the Humber Monster, the Devil Dog of Hull Docks and what is thought to be the earliest recorded sighting of a UFO in the country dating back to 1800s.
All these occurred in what many would consider less enlightened times, when strange and inexplicable phenomena were ascribed a mythical and supernatural explanation. But urban legends are not something that belong purely to the past. New legends swirl around us all the time, in whispered over the fence conversations and drunken gibberish, gesticulated over spilled pints in the local pub.
One such legend emerging from the Greatfield and Bilton Grange estates of East Hull, is that of the Pig Man. A porcine human abomination, that has been spotted raking through wheelie bins, and hobbling through the dark streets, supporting his twisted and deformed frame with a large walking stick. Residents report hearing his blood chilling squeals, echoing through the estates. Many afraid to investigate the sound snuffling and grunting, emanating from their back gardens and side passageways. As if the idea of Pig Man creature shuffling through the streets and riffling through bins wasn't weird enough, there is another aspect to the story that is even more inexplicable. That our little porker has a fondness for discarded crisp and snack packaging. Especially pork or bacon flavoured snacks it would seem. Leading people to conclude that Pig Man has cannibalistic tendencies. |
Staff at the Goat & Compass on Falkland Road, Greatfield Estate have found their bins tipped over and rubbish strewn everywhere on a number of occasions. At first they thought it was just local kids "mucking around", but started to notice as they cleared up the mess, that the Pork Scratching and Frazzles packets were missing. The aptly named Professor Ernest Porcum of the University of Hull's Zoology department has stated that cannibalistic "savaging" is common among domestic pig breeds. But also claims that our mysterious Pig Man may have a craving for salt, which is a sign of Adrenal Fatigue. A condition that can be brought on by among other things stress, lack of sleep and a poor diet, and interestingly can be treated in humans by a glandular extract acquired from pigs. Is our Pig Man a by-product of a allergic reaction to a treatment for Adrenal Fatigue? Maybe so, or maybe we'll never know!
