One Hull Of A Story: The Naked Truth

Whenever anyone mentions naturism I always think of Carry On Camping. Not that the film is about a nudist camp, but after seeing a naturist film at the local cinema Sid James and Bernard Bresslaw conspire to take their girlfriends to the nudist camp called Paradise, they've seen in the film. Nudist films are a thing of the 50s and 60s, but the image of people frolicking around, playing volleyball and tennis, while a narrator with a clipped BBC accent talks about the benefits of getting at one with nature, is one I just can't shake off.
I just learned the other day, that one of the biggest Sun Clubs (the jolly carefree sounding name given to nudist camps) is located in Hull. Or just on the edge of North Bransholme to be precise. The Yorkshire Sun Society, a members club for naturists, has 26 acres wooded camp. Started in 1932, and developed by its members over the years, boasts that it is the best naturist facility in the North. With Swimming pool and Sauna, Jacuzzi, Clubhouse, Bar, Boules court, Petanque, Miniten, Darts, Volleyball, Water volleyball, Pool table, Children's playground, and BBQ. |

Many members own chalets, sat secluded in the woods, that attract a wide variety of wild life, such as deer, badgers, foxes, squirrels and even peacocks! All explained on their website www.yorkshiresun.co.uk. For the curious, there's even a gallery, of the happy carefree campers enjoying the clubs facilities. Boasting some 150 members of all ages, from their 20s into their 80s, it would seem that they have created an idyllic community of like minded people, who simply enjoy being able to let it all hang out. Though the website does mention that members do wear clothes in cold weather. Which I imagine with British weather as it is, means they are actually clothed more often than they are in their birthday suits.

There's a long history of naturism in the UK, going back as far as the late 1800s, with the first naturist camp being established in the 1920s. Something that seems to go against the stereotype of the uptight Victorian values that still permeate some aspects of our society. We snigger, become a bit embarrassed, and get all coy about the idea of being nude in public. That's the British way, isn't it? However cool, hip and street you may think you are. Remember that while you're worrying about what to wear on that night out up Princes Ave or Newland. Contemplating what people will think of your fashion choices, and how they will judge you. There are a bunch of people out there that have rejected that social construct. People who refuse to be judged on how they look, by simply taking all their clothes off and being just themselves, and nothing else.
