Over the years of posting images on Weird Retro's facebook page, I have on occasions fallen foul of facebook's prudish preoccupation with nipples. Posting images designed to amuse rather than titillate, on a page for adults that enjoy irreverent posts that poke fun at the past, sometimes the odd nipple pops up. Producing a reaction from facebook, that resulted in usually a 24 hour ban from posting. One example was a still shot from the film Devil Doll (1964), a British horror about an evil ventriloquist, and his dummy Hugo. Interestingly there is no 'nipple' shot in this scene of the actual film. Maybe facebook censored that too. But the small nip-slip sent facebook into spasms of salacious shame and thus the ban.

The facebook nipple police, have become infamous over the years. Though facebook claim that it's other users that flag-up any offending areola, that they just act on complaints. That it's the keyboard warrior nipple narcs of the world, panic clicking to report any sign of offending flesh, that are to blame. And that they don't have a specially trained crack team of prissy Puritans poised to sweep into action each time a pert protuberance pops-up.
It's not just nipples that have caused consternation with facebook. The post of a vintage satirical advert for Pubie... The Bionic Pubic Hair saw me banned for another 24 hours. Sure the advert featured the lower half of a nude female body in the background, in a pose akin to the nudes of Renaissance painting. Okay, so maybe comparing a 1979 satirical advert to an Italian old master maybe stretching things, but all the same who gets offended by a little peak of 70s bush? The solution to these issues of incongruous impropriety? Self censorship it would seem. With the aid of Photoshop a perfectly placed facebook logo, placates the prudes, and puts paid to the Puritan posse's preposterous preoccupation with the shocking sight of the female form. It would seem, that facebook have no issue with sexism and misogyny, with violence and intolerance, people spouting bile and hate, and views on society most folks left back in the 1970s. That's all okay, that's freedom of speech. But post a nipple pic, and pow!!! You're nicked! The problem lies in different cultural norms as to what is and isn't acceptable imagery in those blurred boundaries that the World Wide Web creates. That some of us see no sexual element to these images, simply seeing them for the inconsequentially irreverent innocence with which they were posted. While others sit in an uptight world of unease, scrolling through facebook with one hand over their faces in fear of finding an offensive flash of flesh. Meh! I guess I'll still fall foul of facebook's fetish for forcing fig leaves on the female form. And long may it last, as it makes me laugh. |
